Romans 13:1-7

The origins of government

Two types of rule – both of which were established in upper rooms

1.  Tyranny – being served by others

2.  Being a servant

Considering types of governing

There are only two potential choices for governing.

1.  Self-governing

2.  Collective governing

One (unchecked) leads to anarchy.

The other (unchecked) leads to totalitarianism.

Governing or government is not wrong, and it is actually best if:

1.  It is limited.

2.  It recognizes a Higher Power (God).

Isaiah 33:22 – “For the Lord is our judge, the Lord is our lawgiver, the Lord is our king; he will save us.” [emphasis added in bold]

Three purposes for government:

1.  To defend/protect your person.

2.  To defend/protect your property.

3.  To defend/protect your freedoms.

Government is strongest at the most local level:

1.  Strongest – myself and my family

2.  Second strongest – my city

3.  Third strongest – my state

4.  Fourth strongest – my nation

Three institutions God created:

1.  Family

2.  Church

3.  Government

The first should be strongest; the third, the weakest!  The strongest rule should be at the local level.

Romans 13 – How to have a good testimony in a government that is not godly.
