A New Song in My Heart – Psalm 84

* Psalm 84 is a pilgrimage song.

* This Psalm was written by David.

* It may have been occasioned during the time that David was in exile.

* “Door keepers” –
1.  Guarded the four sides of the tabernacle (temple)
2.  The first gatekeepers were under the authority of Phinehas, the son of Eleazar, the grandson of Aaron.
3.  Gatekeepers guarded the house of God by night but opened the doors by day.

* Gittith is a stringed instrument.

In this Psalm, God’s house . . .

1.  Inspires a sense of delight (v. 1)

2.  Inspires a sense of desire (v. 2)

Two birds mentioned:
a.  Sparrow – “the worthless bird”
b.  Swallow – “the wandering bird”

The house of God
a.  Is a place for the unwanted
b.  Is a place for the unsettled
c.  Is a place for the ungrown
d.  Is a place for the unsecured

3.  Inspires a sense of determination (vv. 5-6)

Two meanings of Baca:
a.  Garbage dump
b.  Valley of weeping or tears.

* Some believe it was a valley filled with Balsam trees.

4.  Inspires a sense of duty (v. 10)

5.  Inspires a sense of daily deliverance (vv. 11-12)
