* Psalm 53 is a Psalm of David.

* It was probably written after a tremendous victory over a godless people.
5 godless enemies of David:
1) Philistines
2) Amalekites
3) Moabites
4) Edomites
5) Syrians

* This Psalm is closely associated with Psalm 14.
“To the chief musician upon Mahalath”

*”Mahalath” means “sick” and describes a sad song.

* “Maschil” means “wisdom or understanding” and describes a really important teaching Psalm.

Psalm about the godless.
1) The foolishness of the godless (vv. 1-3)

Phrases which describe the godless:
a) Fool
b) Corrupt
c) Abominable
d) Gone back
e) Filthy

* How our world regularly spreads filth:
1st – with their mouths
2nd – with their minds

Charles H. Spurgeon quote:
“The church is designed to be in the world like a boat is designed to be in the water.  However, the boat is in trouble when the water gets into it as much as the church is in trouble when the world gets into it.”

Psalm 14 – Yahweh or Jehovah – Israel’s God
Psalm 53 – Elohim – The universe’s God
“You worship God as you widen the gap between you and Him.”
