Teachers’ Convention Update 2012 (WI Dells)

The Minnesota Association of Christian Schools and the Wisconsin Association of Christian Schools conducted a teachers’ convention at the Glacier Canyon Lodge in Wisconsin Dells on October 10-12, 2012. The theme was “Learn of Me” taken from the Bible verse, Matthew 11:29, which states, “Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls.” The actual convention took place on Thursday and Friday, October 10-11.

Mr. Graves, Mr. Ohlemacher, Mr. Cain, Mr. McKinney, Mr. Erik McKay, Miss Cain, Miss Clear, Mrs. Clear, Mrs. Ohlemacher, Mrs. Pierson, Mrs. McKay, and Mrs. Murphy attended the convention. We left on Wednesday, October 10, promptly at 11 a.m. from the front church parking lot on a beautiful cool day. We arrived at our destination at approximately 3:30 p.m. We checked in and settled into our rooms! After a little bit of down time, we met at 5 p.m. and went to dinner at the Cracker Barrel restaurant just down the street. After eating, we made a “Wal-Mart run” afterward, which included Mrs. Clear being paged just for fun by the ladies! With the baseball playoffs and a one-time debate between Vice President Joe Biden and Vice-Presidential Nominee Paul Ryan on television some of the staff were glued to the television.

Thursday morning the general session started at 9 a.m. with Pastor Steven Brower, who spoke on the theme verse from Matthew 11:29. I was able to attend, “Filling the Seats” workshop from Mr. David Pyle during Workshop I. We had a good luncheon where Dr. Valerie Riley, who taught at First Baptist School many years ago and is now a professor at Trinity Baptist College, presented information to teachers so we may help struggling students in our schools. During Workshop II, Dr. Jeff Walton spoke on, “A Christian Philosophy of Education-Part 1.” In Workshop III, David Pyle’s workshop on “Take It from Me” was a help to many of the administrators. At 3:30 p.m. we closed the day with the general session by Dr. Brian Carruthers who spoke on “Models of Learning and Life to Students.” He talked about 1) Knowing God, 2) Serving God, and 3) Seeking God. The staff ate at the Ponderosa Steakhouse afterward.

Friday morning I sat in a workshop entitled, “Improving Your Administrative Communication Skills” by Dr. Brian Carruthers. During the last workshop, I was in a session with Dr. Jeff Walton regarding, “AACS Accreditation Basics.”

At 11 a.m. we had the last general session by Dr. Jeff Walter, who is the Executive Director of the American Association of Christian Schools. He spoke about investment strategies for young people which included the following: 1) Edify all, 2) Discipline with love, and 3) Be an encourager. We went to Famous Dave’s for lunch before leaving for Rosemount.

What a blessing it was to be able to attend the convention this year with many of our staff. We had a wonderful time of fellowship and enjoyed a very enriching time at the convention. It was announced that there were 220 delegates this year, up from 160 the previous year.

Below is the video taken at Ponderosa Steakhouse. Our group, as well as some from Ponderosa, sing to Lacey using the speakerphone on Mrs. Clear’s phone.
