Nationwide Youth Conference
Tuesday, July 17 – Friday, July 20, 2012
Hammond, Indiana
(Important Information Regarding the Conference)

Eligibility: Young people who are entering the 6th grade through those who graduated out of the 12th grade in 2012.

Introduction & Welcome: Thank you for the consideration of having your son/daughter attend the nationwide youth conference in Hammond, Indiana. We attended this conference in July of 2010.

I believe preaching demands a verdict; therefore, God uses preaching to work in our heart and stirs us to make a decision for Him. These decisions will help teens grow and mature in their walk with God. Several of you have sent your kids to preaching conferences, missions trips, or camp. Others of you may be new to this, and I would like to welcome you to an exciting part of the youth. You will come to realize how beneficial trips like this are in the life of a teenager. Thank you for considering this conference for your child(ren). Although we are looking forward to a fun time of fellowship and great laughs, we realize the seriousness of a trip like this, too. Please join with me in prayer that the Lord will work in hearts during these days. This detailed information should thoroughly prepare you for the conference.

Chaperones: Mr. Charlie Graves, Mr. Dave Von Wald, Mrs. Annette Von Wald, Mr. Nate Otterdahl, Mr. Brett Tidrick, and Mrs. Valerie Clear

Transportation: We will use our church bus(es) for the trip.

Lodging:We will be staying in the dormitories of Hyles-Anderson College on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday evening. The address is Hyles-Anderson College, 8400 Burr Street, Crown Point, Indiana 46307 Phone: 219.365.4031. The services (conference) are located at First Baptist Church of Hammond, 473 State Street, Hammond, Indiana 46320, Phone: 219.932.0711.

The 2012 Youth Conference theme is “Follow Me.

Time: We will load and leave from the front (south) parking lot. We plan to leave at 8 a.m. on Tuesday, July 17. Please be here at approximately 7:40 a.m. so we can load your suitcase. Please do not be late. We plan to leave Crown Point, Indiana at 8 a.m. on Friday, July 20, and arrive in Rosemount between 5 and 6 p.m.

Cell Phones: While cell phones have become a part of our everyday lives, my major request is that they not be a distraction, especially during all of the services. While cell phones are allowed and can certainly help pass the time with games during travel, I would ask you to please instruct your son or daughter about cell phone and camera usage regarding, but not limited to, the following: cell phones are to be put away at all times during the services (no exceptions); texting should only be done at appropriate times; the use of any camera within the dormitories where it is deemed inappropriate is forbidden. We will not tolerate any problems relating to a cell phone. By allowing your child to attend, you are giving me the discretion to confiscate your child’s cell phone if they abuse these rules. I will then return the phone at the end of the trip. It is possible to have a cell phone on this trip and not abuse the privilege.

Cost and Meals: The cost for the trip is $100. We have worked hard to keep the cost down. There will be additional monies needed for your son or daughter for a few meals (marked below in the itinerary). All meals will be at a fast-food restaurant. While McDonald’s can get “old”, it will be our first choice based on its cost-effectiveness. This will help keep the cost down for you as parents. Additional spending money can be brought if your child is interested in extra purchases at the conference such as shirts and other items that may be for sale. We are not responsible for lost or stolen money. For our younger attendees, if you wish to have one of our workers hold their money for them, please just let us know.

Luggage and What to Pack. This trip is for only 4 days and 3 nights. We ask that your child brings only what is necessary and that the size of the luggage reflects this. The teenagers will need three church outfits (Tuesday evening, Wednesday, and Thursday). They will also need approximately 3 sets of casual-type clothing for travel and non-service times. The following is a list of what to pack or bring:

  • a good attitude and spirit!
  • your Bible (and maybe a small notebook or paper and pen, if you would like to take notes or create a small journal of the trip)
  • personal hygiene items (toothpaste, toothbrush, deodorant, etc.)
  • dress shoes
  • tennis shoes
  • belt (guys)
  • towel
  • bedding (either sheets or preferably a sleeping bag)
  • pillow
  • appropriate book to read or something to do while traveling (miniature electronic games such as Yahtzee, etc. are approved – if something is questionable, please ask)
  • 3 sets of casual clothes (for traveling and any non-conference time)
    • Men: Neat-looking jeans, non-offensive t-shirt (or collared shirt if you prefer), and tennis shoes
    • Ladies: Below-the-knee length skirt (jean, khaki or other) or culottes, loose-fitting t-shirt or appropriate top, and footwear (hosiery does not need to be worn during the casual time)
  • 3 sets of dress clothes (for during the actual conference time)
    • Men: Dress pants, dress shirt, tie, socks and dress shoes, (no tennis shoes, please)
    • Ladies: Sunday-type dress outfit or skirt and blouse (no denim or flip flops; hosiery must be worn – either socks or nylons)

Please do NOT bring the following:

  • A bad attitude or a spirit that is not appropriate
  • Clothing that has not passed dress check
  • ANY MP3-type music players. They are not allowed.
  • Headphones (if your phone is an MP3 player)
  • Luggage that is too large
  • Large carry-on bags

Dress Code and Dress Check: Our goal is to have a godly testimony as our young people represent you as parents, their youth group, their church, and ultimately, their Saviour. First Baptist Church of Rosemount seeks to have a high standard for our young people. Because of this, WE WILL ASK FOR YOUR SON OR DAUGHTER TO BRING IN THE CLOTHING THAT THEY PLAN TO WEAR ON THE TRIP TO BE APPROVED AHEAD OF TIME. Mrs. Graves will check the ladies’ clothing before or after church services or at a time previously set up with her. Mr. Graves will check the guys’ clothing. The listing above describes the type of clothing to bring. Dress checks are very common on trips such as this. First Baptist Church reserves the right to ask a teenager to change if he or she has clothing deemed inappropriate. Parents, please be sure that your son’s hair is also appropriate.
